Organische Stoffe (abgestorbene Pflanzenteile wie Laub, Rinde, tote Lebewesen) werden mit Hilfe von Bodenlebewesen zersetzt und in Humus umgewandelt.
Aus dem nährstoffreichen Humus können neue Pflanzen wachsen. Sie werden entweder direkt verspeist oder ihre Früchte dienen als Nahrung für Menschen und andere Tiere. Deren Ausscheidungen stehen dann neben anderen Pflanzenresten wieder als Ausgangsstoffe für die Humusbildung zur Verfügung.
